Introducing our next May Athlete of the Month, Lelani Laruelle!
From the track to the tennis court, Lelani has put together an incredible high school athletic career. In track, she’s been ranked #1 in California from 2023-2025, placed 4th at State in 2024, and became the 2025 State Champion while also finishing top 10 nationally. This season, she won the CCS Championship in high jump and finished runner-up in long jump before committing to continue her track career at Cal Berkeley. On the tennis court, Lelani helped lead her team to multiple CCS team finishes, while also earning a CCS Doubles Championship in 2024 and runner-up finish in 2025. Congratulations to Lelani on an incredible high school career and best of luck finishing out the track season!
Congratulations to our first May Athlete of the Month, Joaquin Garcia. Joaquin is a senior and captain of the boys volleyball team where he helped them qualify for CCS Open Division. On the court, he’s a force to be reckoned with a season total 87 kills and leading the team with 84 blocks. Joquin knows how to keep his team hyped and install into them the competitive furry which helped them be so succesful this season. Congratulations on an oustanding senior season, Joquin!!
For our April Athlete of the Month we have Sakurako Kobayashi! She has had an awesome season this year! She placed second in a relay at a national competition in Japan and qualified for CCS in the 200 IM, 100 Free, 100 Breaststroke, and relays. One of her favorite parts of swimming is being with her teammates and cheering each other on before races.

Congratulations to Shiva Kumaraguru, who earned April’s Athlete of the Month with an exceptional performance. He posted a remarkable .451 batting average, meaning he recorded a hit in nearly half of his at-bats, along with an outstanding 1.257 OPS, a measure of both his ability to get on base and hit for power. In addition, he hit 2 home runs and drove in 33 RBIs, showing his impact in producing runs for his team. His combination of consistency, power, and clutch hitting made him one of the most dominant offensive players. Congratulations Shiva on a great junior season!
Hey Matadors!! On April 23rd from 6pm to 7:15pm, we will host our annual Matador Madness event in the MV Rallycourt. This event will allow the incoming freshman class to learn more about all of our athletic programs at MV and will allow them to build connections with their desired sports! Congratulations to our second March Athlete of the Month, Courtney Masli! Courtney is a senior and captain on the MV dance team. Courtney’s consistent leadership has guided the team through many challenges such as adjusting to a new coach. Thanks to her incredible guidance, the team has had an outstanding season, including a 5th place finish in Character/Novelty at Nationals and 1st place finish in Medium Jazz at Lincoln High School. Courtney and her teammates also placed 2nd in Medium Jazz and 4th in Character at Cupertino High School. Her role has been key to her team’s success. Congratulations Courtney on an amazing season so far!
Congratulations to our first March Athlete of the Month, Gillie Ross! Gillie is a 3rd year Track and Field senior this year. As a key role in the Monta Vista track team, she is having a great season in both discus and shot put. This season she has scored a discus personal best of 118’ 6’’ and a shot put personal best of 39’ 5’’, making her not only the top thrower on the MVTF team but also 2nd and 4th in CCS for shot put and discus respectively. Congratulations Gillie on an amazing season so far and this well-deserved recognition!
